Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jimmie Johnson will make his NTT IndyCar Series race debut with the team this weekend as the 2021 season gets underway with the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.
The seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion has signed a two year contract to race for Ganassi alongside defending series champion Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson and new arrival Alex Palou.
Johnson will race on road and street courses in the No.48 Carvana/NTT DATA Honda while series veteran Tony Kanaan will compete in the oval events including the 105th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge which takes place on May 30.
Since joining Chip Ganassi Racing for the final race of last season, the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg, Johnson has immersed himself in the team and has become familiar with the car and will not be like a rookie when he hits the track for the first practice session on Friday morning.
Johnson has also spent countless hours at Honda’s simulator so is well prepared for his race debut.
