Williams Racing has hired former Volkwagen Motorsport boss Sven Smeets as their new Sporting Director. Smeets reunites with his former VW boss, Jost Capito who is now CEO and Team Principal of Williams Racing having replaced the German at VW when Capito moved to McLaren in 2016.
In his new role, Smeets oversees all of Williams racing activities and represents the team in all matters relating to Formula One’s governing body, the FIA.
Smeets is also responsible for the Williams driver academy and attended his first Grand Prix with the team last month when Formula One made their debut in Qatar.
The Belgian reports directly to Jost Capito. Williams head into this weekend’s penultimate race of the season in Saudi Arabia in eighth place in the championship on 23 points, twelve ahead of Alfa Romeo Racing.
