The 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge is just 100 days away as it takes place on Sunday 29 May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and in a tradition that began back in 2016 when they countdown began for the iconic 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
There is a lot to look forward to at this year’s race, not least Helio Castroneves’ Drive For Five’ as the Brazilian attempts to claim an unprecedented fifth Indianapolis 500 win having taken victory with Meyer Shank Racing in 2021.
It is also the first year since 2019 that a full crowd of 300,000 fans is expected to attend the race on Memorial Day weekend.
As we celebrate the fact that there are just 100 days until the Indianapolis 500, here at Paddock Eye we thought we would take a look back at the very first Indianapolis 500.
The inaugural Indianapolis 500 took place on May 30, 1911 and was won by Ray Harroun in a Marman Wasp.
At the time of the race the circuit was paved with bricks, hence the nickname the Brickyard.
