A Tough Qualifying For Dale Coyne Racing

Dale Coyne Racing with RWR’s Takuma Sato in the No.51 Nurtec Honda endured a difficult qualifying session for the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series season-opening Firestone Grand Prix presented by RP Funding on the streets of St Pete.

Takuma Sato starts the race from 22nd following a tricky practice session.

Speaking following the action Sato said:

It was a pretty tough day for our first qualifying together at Dale Coyne Racing with RWR. It’s obviously a disappointing result. It wasn’t easy this morning in practice as I couldn’t get a run on a fresh set of red tires and then someone else hit me from behind and that ended our session. So, in qualifying we didn’t get the balance quite right with the red tires and then I was blocked on my best time by another driver which made me lose a couple of tenths. At that point it was game over for us. We think we have a good race car and hopefully in the warmup we can pick up some speed and have some pace for the first race.”

David Malukas starts his debut IndyCar race from 24th and speaking following the action he said:

What an experience that was for my first NTT INDYCAR SERIES qualifying. It was nice to have the two groups for qualifying because in the practice sessions we were struggling to find a gap. 26 cars on track is a lot, especially with me and my experience coming from Indy Lights, having about half of that. Going into qualifying we had a good gap and were able to put a run in. We did reds for both stints, I’m really new to those because just one lap in practice isn’t enough to learn it. We knew what we needed with the car but we needed to take it that one step higher. All in all it was a great experience. I’m really excited to see how the race is going to go. There’s a lot of strategy so hopefully we can come up with something

Team owner Dale Coyne said:

I’ve been following David in Indy Lights and I was very pleased by what I saw. He had a remarkable season and then he impressed everyone when we tested him back in October. It was his first time in an Indy car and he was the fastest one at the test, even ahead of a veteran driver. And, on top of it all, he comes from right down the road in Chicago, so it’s a perfect fit for us to run David next season,” shared Team Owner Dale Coyne.

“We’re also excited about our new partnership with HMD Motorsports. We can’t wait to start building on this relationship and we’re looking forward to a successful season together.”

Mike Maurini, General Manager of HMD Motorsports said:

Having the HMD Motorsports name in IndyCar was a goal that we had set several years ago and is the first step in the overall plan for the future,” explained Mike Maurini, General Manager of HMD Motorsports. “IndyCar is experiencing major growth and HMD is able to be involved at the right time for our drivers, and partners. Tying the successful Indy Lights program, and business, to an IndyCar effort gives the HMD name a ladder to the upper echelon of open wheel racing in North America. The goal is to continue to win in Indy Lights, expand and grow a commercial side of the business, and advance drivers up into the NTT INDYCAR SERIES
